Description:

The Moravian Historical Society has preserved the story of Moravian history, architecture, art, music, and culture since 1857. Located on the historic Ephrata Tract in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, we maintain the 1740/1743 Whitefield House and the 1740 Gray Cottage, the oldest surviving Moravian structure in North America. We care for 20,000 objects, photographs, and documents and these primary sources help connect students, scholars, and the public to the stories of our past.

One of the oldest historical societies in Pennsylvania, the Moravian Historical Society shares over 500 years of fascinating Moravian contributions to worldwide culture through educational programs for students, colonial-costumed guided historic Nazareth tours, engaging museum exhibits, and public activities.

Guests are able to view the earliest known violin produced in colonial America, paintings by the colonial Moravian artist John Valentine Haidt, a pipe organ made by early America’s premier organ-builder, David Tannenberg, an early 1850s Martin guitar, rare books and much more!

Research:

The Moravian Historical Society cares for an extensive collection that comprises approximately 20,000 objects, books, paintings and other materials, focusing primarily on Moravian church history, music, locations, and people. Items in the collection include decorative objects, educational tools, and utilitarian objects from Moravian connections throughout America and the world. The society also owns two 18th-century Moravian buildings. Photographs, negatives, digital files, and slides of objects along with one-time reproduction rights of items in our collection are available for a nominal fee.
