Description:

Pearl S. Buck International, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization located near Philadelphia in upper Bucks County, PA, carries on Pearl S. Buck’s legacy of bridging cultures and changing lives through humanitarian aid, intercultural education, and historical tours of the Pearl S. Buck House, a National Historic Landmark museum. Pearl S. Buck was a writer, activist, and humanitarian. She was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Literature for her novel, The Good Earth, and the Nobel Prize in Literature for her body of work. Ms. Buck used the spotlight on her to shine a light on the plight of marginalized people everywhere and to advocate for the civil rights movement in the U.S. She also founded Welcome House (the world’s first international biracial adoption agency) and established The Pearl S. Buck Foundation (now Pearl S. Buck International) to provide international humanitarian aid.

Ms. Buck’s groundbreaking words and work paved the way for greater international and intercultural understanding. They also provided life-changing aid for countless impoverished children.

The Pearl S. Buck House, situated on 67 acres of landscaped lawns and manicured gardens, was the home of Pearl S. Buck and her family. The beautiful and iconic Bucks County stone farmhouse contains a rich, intact collection from the extraordinary (the typewriter on which she wrote The Good Earth) to the ordinary (a closet full of board games her family played). Out of 40 historic house museums dedicated to women in the U.S., the Pearl S. Buck House contains the largest intact collection owned by a single woman and female author. Two facilitator and docent-led tours are available – the traditional biographical Life & Legacy tour and the interactive, civic-minded Taking Action tour – as well as a self-guided tour of the grounds and gardens.

The grounds of the estate also contain Pearl S. Buck’s gravesite, greenhouse, award-winning gardens, Cultural Center (a former barn where Ms. Buck held community events), the Estate Pavilion (which houses special events and weddings), and the Welcome Center (which contains the International Gift Shop, the Exhibit Gallery, the Janet L. Mintzer Conference and Event Center, and the offices of Pearl S. Buck International).

Year-round programs include: tours of the Pearl S. Buck House National Historic Landmark museum; school field trips; group tours with special pricing, a Writer’s Guild, and writing classes.
