Description:

As part of the early Scots-Irish Settlement, in now “East” Allen Township, our 3 ½ acre site consists of three early buildings.

Purchased in 1958, the 1785 Wolf Academy is a one room limestone structure built as a school of higher learning for the young men of the area. Our namesake, George Wolf, grew up in the township. He attended, and later taught, in this Academy. He went on to become the 7th Governor of the state of PA, and was instrumental in the passage of the Common School Act in 1834, which provided for a free education to all children of the state.

The 1795 Ralston-McKeen House is a stone Federal home with 7 working fireplaces. Its beautiful center hall has its original 18th c. stairway, and the home retains most of its original floors and doors. Work is ongoing to restore the kitchen wing.

Built in the late 1800s, the Monocacy School began as a one-room schoolhouse, with two additional classrooms added in the early 20th century. This building houses our museum, restrooms, and meeting room. An update to the Museum is in the planning stages. Our focus will be on Governor George Wolf and his contributions to the state of Pennsylvania, the Scots-Irish settlement and their German neighbors, and early education.

A visit to our site will give the history of our society, our buildings and their inhabitants, and information on early schools and education. Our site includes an herb and pleasure garden with brick walks. Hearth cooking demonstrations take place during most of our events.

ADA Accessibility: Visitors must climb steps to enter two main buildings.

Year-Round Programs:
